Twin Cartoon Characters: 10 Iconic Animated Twins

famous twin cartoon characters

Twin cartoon characters are some of the most fun duos in all of animation. I love the bickering, the matching outfits, and the way they finish each other’s sentences. From Dipper and Mabel to Phil and Lil, the best cartoon twins stick with you for life.

This is my full guide to the most famous and iconic twin characters in cartoons. First I cover my favorite duos in detail, then I drop a big reference table of even more twins, sorted by Disney twins, anime twins, and superhero twins. Some are sweet, some scheme, and a couple are basically one person in two bodies. Let’s dive in.

Popular twin cartoon characters

11
Dipper and Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls)

Dipper and Mabel Pines - famous twin cartoon characters

Dipper and Mabel Pines are my favorite cartoon twins, easy. They spend one strange summer in the spooky town of Gravity Falls with their Grunkle Stan. Dipper is the nervous, note-taking one. Mabel is pure chaos and sunshine. Together they are perfect, and fans rank them the number one cartoon twins for good reason.

Fun fact: Creator Alex Hirsch based the twins on himself and his real twin sister, Ariel. She really did wear wacky sweaters and crush on someone new every week, and she always wanted a pet pig. That is exactly why Mabel has Waddles.

10
Stanford and Stanley Pines (Gravity Falls)

Stanford and Stanley Pines - Twin Brothers

Gravity Falls has a second set of twins, and they nearly steal the show. Stan is the grumpy con man running the Mystery Shack. Ford is his long-lost genius brother. The episode that finally reveals their split, A Tale of Two Stans, broke my heart a little. They prove twins do not have to be little kids to carry a story.

Phil and Lil (Rugrats)

Phil and Lil (Rugrats) - cartoon twin characters

Phil and Lil DeVille are the babies who do everything together. They are boy and girl twins, and they share one big love: bugs, mud, and mischief. They bicker nonstop, then defend each other a second later. That is classic twin behavior, and it is why they have lasted since the 90s.

8
Jim and Tim Possible (Kim Possible)

Jim and Tim Possible (Kim Possible)

Jim and Tim are Kim Possible’s little brothers, and Kim calls them the Tweebs. They are pint-sized geniuses who build rockets and gadgets for fun. They even talk in their own code, with a “Hicka-bicka-boo” and a “Hoo-sha.” Mostly, they live to annoy their big sister, like all good Disney Channel siblings.

7
Más y Menos (Teen Titans)

Plus and Minus - DC Twins Teen Titans

Más y Menos are twin speedsters from Teen Titans, part of the Titans East team. They speak Spanish and zip around the screen as a perfect pair. They are tiny, fast, and full of attitude. Some fans know them by the English version of their names, Plus and Minus.

The catch: Their super-speed only works when the twins are touching. The moment they join hands and shout their catchphrase, they blur into action. Split them up and the powers switch off. It might be the most twin superpower ever written.

6
Susan and Mary Test (Johnny Test)

Merry and Susan Test (Jonny Test)

Susan and Mary Test are Johnny’s older twin sisters, and they are scary smart. They run a full science lab out of the house and build wild inventions. A lot of their plans involve their crush, the boy next door. They are the real brains behind the whole show.

5
Lola and Lana (The Loud House)

Lola and Lana (The Loud House)

Lola and Lana are six-year-old twins, and they could not be more opposite. Lola is the pageant princess in a tiara. Lana is the tomboy covered in mud, happiest with a wrench in her hand. Same face, totally different worlds, which is the whole joke.

4
Sherri and Terri (The Simpsons)

Sherri and Terri - The Simpsons

Sherri and Terri are Bart’s identical classmates in Springfield. They finish each other’s sentences and love teasing Bart. You can barely tell them apart, which is half the fun. They are small-time troublemakers with big attitude.

3
Patty and Selma (The Simpsons)

Patty and Selma - Cartoon Twin Sisters

Patty and Selma are Marge’s older twin sisters, and they are gloriously grumpy. They chain-smoke, they love bowling, and they cannot stand Homer. Under all the sarcasm, they do care about family. Sometimes. A little.

Voice trivia: Julie Kavner voices Marge and both of her grouchy twin sisters, Patty and Selma. So all three Bouvier sisters are the same actor having a conversation with herself.

2
Chip and Dale (Rescue Rangers)

Chip and Dale (Rescue Rangers)

Chip and Dale are the classic chipmunk duo, partners in Rescue Rangers. Chip is the smart, no-nonsense leader in the little fedora. Dale is the goofball who would rather snack than plan. They are not officially twins, but they are the ultimate matching pair.

How to tell them apart: Chip has a small black nose and one front tooth. Dale has a big red nose and two buck teeth. Once you see it, you can never unsee it.

1
The Cramp Twins (The Cramp Twins)

The Cramp Twins features twin brothers

The Cramp Twins are about as mismatched as twins get. Wayne is the gross, scheming one. Lucien is the gentle, eco-friendly one who just wants peace. They share a room and almost nothing else. The show was a hit across the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.

What makes a great twin duo

After watching way too many of these shows, I think the best twin cartoon characters all share a few things:

  • Opposite personalities: one is calm, one is chaos. Think Dipper and Mabel, or Lola and Lana.
  • An unbreakable bond: they fight constantly, then have each other’s backs the second it counts.
  • A shared gimmick: matching looks, a secret language, or a power that only works together, like Más y Menos.
  • Double the comedy: two characters bouncing off each other is just funnier, which is why chaos twins like Ruffnut and Tuffnut from How to Train Your Dragon work so well.

More twin superheroes in comics and cartoons

Cartoons and comics are stuffed with twin heroes and villains. A few more pairs worth knowing:

  • Wonder Twins (Zan and Jayna): the Super Friends duo who bump fists and yell “Wonder Twin powers, activate!” Zan turns into water, Jayna turns into animals.
  • Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver: Marvel’s Maximoff twins, Wanda and Pietro, longtime Avengers with reality-bending and super-speed.
  • Tomax and Xamot: the Crimson Twins from G.I. Joe, who famously feel each other’s pain and finish each other’s sentences.
  • The Dee Dees: the synchronized troublemaker twins from Batman Beyond.

Twin cartoon characters by type

Looking for a specific kind of duo? Here is a quick cheat sheet:

  • Twin sisters: Lola and Lana, Sherri and Terri, Patty and Selma, Susan and Mary.
  • Twin brothers: Stan and Ford, Jim and Tim, Más y Menos, the Cramp Twins.
  • Boy and girl twins: Dipper and Mabel, Phil and Lil.
  • Identical twins: Patty and Selma, Sherri and Terri.
  • The scheming type: Susan and Mary, Sherri and Terri, the closest these shows get to an evil twin.

My favorite twin duo

If I had to crown one pair, it is Dipper and Mabel. They nail the real twin thing: constant bickering, total loyalty, and a bond nothing can break. But every duo on this list brought something fun to the screen.
