A cigar-chomping dog and a hyperactive, slightly unhinged rabbit walk into a crime scene. Steve Purcell created them as a comic.

After ranking this many animated sleuths, I noticed a pattern. The great cartoon detective characters tend to win us over in one of a few ways.
Some are simply brilliant, like Detective Conan or Basil. They solve real puzzles with airtight logic that would make Sherlock proud. Others succeed almost entirely by accident, and that is its own kind of charm.
Watching Inspector Gadget bumble into a win never gets old.
Then there is the crew factor. The best detective shows surround their lead with a memorable supporting cast, from Mystery Inc’s whole gang to Darkwing’s loyal Launchpad. A truly great one also needs an unforgettable catchphrase, an iconic look, or a villain worth chasing.
Nail two or three of those, and you have a detective people remember for decades.
Female Cartoon Detective Characters
The genre has always skewed heavily male. So the female detective cartoon characters who broke through deserve a real spotlight.
Velma Dinkley is the obvious standout.
