Desert Punk

Desert Punk is proof the end of the world can be a blast. It follows Kanta, a crude, scheming mercenary surviving in a brutal desert wasteland. Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Gargantia is the warm, optimistic pick. A soldier from a space war crash-lands on a future Earth that is now a flooded waterworld. He has to learn how to truly live among the peaceful fleet that rescues him. It is a hopeful post-apocalyptic story about finding a home and a reason to keep going. A real feel-good gem.

Black Bullet

Black Bullet delivers slick action with a surprisingly dark and tragic core. Humanity survives behind giant walls against monstrous creatures born from the Gastrea virus, defended by agents paired with the Cursed Children, girls infected with that same virus. Rentaro and his young partner Enju anchor a story that is not afraid to go to grim places. A hard-hitting watch.

Knights of Sidonia

Knights of Sidonia is space survival at its most epic. Long after aliens called the Gauna destroyed Earth, humanity’s last remnants flee across the galaxy aboard a massive seed ship. They fight off the threat in giant mecha. Pilot Nagate anchors a story with real scope and stakes. The CG animation takes a minute to click, but the tension is fantastic.

Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown is gorgeous, dramatic, and a little messy, but I love it anyway.

In a Japan devastated by the Apocalypse Virus, an oppressive regime rules with an iron fist. A timid boy named Shu gains the power to pull weapons out of people’s hearts. It is a dystopian spectacle with a stunning soundtrack and huge emotional swings. Style over substance, but what style.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Kabaneri is basically Attack on Titan on a steampunk train, and it rules.

Survivors huddle in fortified stations and armored trains while zombie-like creatures called the Kabane roam the land. A young engineer named Ikoma and the mysterious Mumei fight back in this steampunk zombie apocalypse. The animation is gorgeous and the action is relentless.

From the New World

From the New World is a slow-burn that quietly becomes one of the most unsettling shows on this list.

It is set a thousand years from now, in a serene society where people wield psychic powers. The story follows a group of kids peeling back the horrifying secrets holding their world together. This unsettling dystopian epic rewards patience enormously. Trust me and stick with it.

Highschool of the Dead

Highschool of the Dead is the definitive over-the-top zombie apocalypse anime.

A group of high schoolers, led by Takashi Komuro, fight their way through the undead as society collapses in real time. It is pure adrenaline, gloriously pulpy, and heavy on the fan service. Turn your brain off and enjoy the carnage.

Seraph of the End

Seraph of the End serves up a stylish vampire apocalypse. After a virus wipes out everyone over thirteen, vampires seize control and farm the surviving children for blood. Yuichiro escapes and joins a demon-army unit sworn to wipe the vampires out. It is moody, action-packed, and full of tragic bonds. A great pick for dark shonen fans.

Devilman Crybaby

Devilman Crybaby is brutal and unforgettable, and absolutely not for everyone.
