Why it ranks here: swap the setting for medieval Europe and this is almost Berserk.

Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass trades swords for a cyberpunk dystopia, so the setting is nothing like Berserk. What carries over is the moral weight. It is a world that forces you to question what justice even means, with plenty of dark themes.

My take: no monsters, but the ethical gut-punches land hard.

Monster

Monster proves you do not need demons to be terrifying. A surgeon saves a boy who grows into a serial killer. The hunt that follows keeps asking who the real monster is.

Bottom line: a grounded thriller, but its darkness rivals anything with a sword.

Goblin Slayer

Goblin Slayer opens with one of the most brutal episodes in modern anime, and it sets the tone. The lead lives only to exterminate goblins. He is driven by a past tragedy he cannot let go.

Why it works: that obsessive, scarred drive is Guts to the core.

Hellsing Ultimate

If the supernatural side of Berserk hooked you, Hellsing Ultimate delivers. Alucard is an immortal vampire who hunts monsters for a secret order. The show drowns nearly every fight in gore.

My call: pure style and carnage, with a monster you do not want to cross.

Claymore

Claymore is the dark medieval fantasy Berserk fans always circle back to. Half-human, half-monster warriors called Claymores slay demons known as yoma. They walk the same thin line between human and beast.

The pitch: the setting, the swords, the body horror, it hits nearly every Berserk note.

Devilman Crybaby

Few anime go as hard as Devilman Crybaby. Akira becomes a devil but keeps his human heart. He is torn apart trying to protect people while fighting his own violence.

Do not trust the cute art. Made in Abyss looks adorable, then drags you into one of the grimmest survival stories in anime. Riko descends into a deadly, mysterious pit looking for her mother.

Parasyte runs on body horror and a big question: what makes us human? An alien takes over Shinichi’s hand instead of his brain. The two are forced to survive together in a world of flesh-eating parasites.

My take: the gore is nasty, and the philosophy underneath is sharp.

Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul captures Berserk’s grim atmosphere well. After an attack leaves Kaneki half-ghoul, he is stuck between two worlds. Neither one fully accepts him.

Where it lands: the identity horror and the tragedy do a lot of the work.

Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer is the brightest pick here, so temper your grimdark expectations. Still, Tanjiro’s war against demons in feudal Japan shares Berserk’s core. You get a driven hero and a world full of monsters.

For me: lighter than Berserk, but the swordplay and the demons scratch the itch.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan does despair as well as anything. Humanity hides behind walls from giant man-eating titans. Every victory costs something terrible.

My call: the hopeless-world atmosphere is peak Berserk, just with titans.

Vinland Saga

This is the one. Vinland Saga is a brutal Viking epic. Thorfinn’s revenge-fueled journey through a world of endless war is the closest thing anime has to Guts.
