12 Cartoon Sea Animal Characters

Author: Kenny.b Updated: December 29, 2025

From SpongeBob SquarePants to Dory from Finding Nemo, these lovable cartoon sea animals have captured kids’ imaginations for generations.

I’ve always had a soft spot for cartoon sea animal characters—maybe because underwater worlds are basically built for animation. Everything can be brighter, sillier, and more magical down there. Plus, ocean characters are usually written with big emotions: loyal best friends, brave little explorers, and the occasional giant sea monster that traumatized us as children.

And even when these characters are mostly here to make us laugh, they still sneak in some surprisingly good lessons about friendship, courage, and caring about the ocean.

Cartoon Ocean Animals Everyone Recognizes

Cartoon-based sea creatures are one of the easiest ways for kids (and honestly, adults too) to connect with ocean life. If you want to go deep on Disney’s marine lineup specifically, this page is a fun rabbit hole: Disney marine animals.

Also, quick confession: this list could be way bigger. I once went on a binge and ended up collecting 100+ famous cartoon sea creatures across movies, TV, and kids’ shows. This is just the “most recognizable” starter pack.

How I picked these

  • Icon factor: you can name them from one image.
  • Kid-friendly: most are great “cartoon sea animals for kids.”
  • Variety: fish, crabs, whales, sea monsters, and yes—Bikini Bottom chaos.

Sebastian (The Little Mermaid)

Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid, a famous cartoon sea animal character who sings Under the Sea

🦀 Species: Crab

🎬 From: The Little Mermaid (1989)

🎵 Why kids love him: Music + comedy + “responsible adult” energy

🧠 My take: Sebastian is the ocean’s most stressed babysitter, and that’s exactly why he’s funny.

Sebastian is Ariel’s advisor and basically the voice of “please don’t ruin your life” while Ariel does it anyway. He’s also one of those iconic Disney characters that feels instantly recognizable even if you haven’t watched the movie in years.

Flounder (The Little Mermaid)

Flounder from The Little Mermaid, a cute cartoon sea animal for kids and Ariel’s best friend

🐠 Species: Tropical fish

🎬 From: The Little Mermaid (1989)

💛 Vibe: Loyal best friend who’s terrified but shows up anyway

🧠 My take: Flounder is the definition of “brave doesn’t mean fearless.”

Flounder is anxious, adorable, and constantly in over his head—yet he’s always there for Ariel. For me, that’s why he’s one of the cutest “cartoon sea animals” in Disney history. If you’re into older animation eras, The Little Mermaid also fits nicely alongside other classic 80s cartoons and movies.

Monstro (Pinocchio)

Monstro the whale from Pinocchio, a famous cartoon sea creature villain from classic Disney

🐋 Species: Whale

🎬 From: Pinocchio (1940)

😱 Why kids remember him: “giant ocean threat” nightmare fuel

🧠 My take: Monstro is one of the original “giant sea creature” villains—pure panic in cartoon form.

Monstro is classic Disney menace: massive, destructive, and terrifying because the characters feel genuinely small next to him. In the film, Pinocchio and Geppetto escape after provoking Monstro to expel them, and the chase sequence is still intense even by modern standards.

Tamatoa (Moana)

Tamatoa giant crab from Moana, a shiny-obsessed cartoon sea creature and famous Disney ocean villain

🦀 Species: Giant crab

🎬 From: Moana (2016)

✨ Vibe: Glam villain who hoards shiny things

🧠 My take: Tamatoa is what happens when a sea creature becomes a diva—and it’s perfect.

Tamatoa lives in Lalotai (the Realm of Monsters) and is obsessed with “shinies.” He’s the kind of villain kids quote because he’s funny, dramatic, and visually unforgettable.

Nemo (Finding Nemo)

Nemo the clownfish from Finding Nemo, a famous cartoon sea animal character and kids ocean movie icon

🐠 Species: Clownfish

🎬 From: Finding Nemo (2003)

💪 Glow-up: timid kid → brave problem-solver

🧠 My take: Nemo is the ocean version of “I want independence,” and it hits every time.

Nemo’s story works because it’s small and universal: he wants freedom, his dad wants safety, and they both learn something the hard way. It’s one of the rare kids’ movies that still makes me emotional as an adult.

Dory (Finding Nemo)

Dory the blue tang fish from Finding Nemo, a cute cartoon sea animal character known for short-term memory loss

🐟 Species: Blue tang

🎬 From: Finding Nemo (2003)

💙 Why kids love her: upbeat, funny, never gives up

🧠 My take: Dory is pure emotional momentum—she keeps the story moving when everyone else is panicking.

Dory’s short-term memory loss is played for comedy, but it also gives her this weird superpower: she always lives in “right now,” which makes her brave in moments where fear would normally take over.

Luca Paguro (Luca)

Luca Paguro from Pixar Luca, a cartoon sea monster boy who transforms into a human on land

🧜 Species: Sea monster

🎬 From: Luca (2021)

🌞 Vibe: coming-of-age + friendship + curiosity

🧠 My take: Luca is the “cute sea creature” pick that’s more about feelings than action.

Luca’s story is basically “what if the ocean kid found the surface world and it changed him.” It’s warm, kid-friendly, and visually gorgeous.

Tick-Tock the Crocodile (Peter Pan)

Tick-Tock the Crocodile from Peter Pan, a famous cartoon sea animal who swallowed a clock and chases Captain Hook

🐊 Species: Crocodile

🎬 From: Peter Pan (1953)

⏰ Icon detail: swallowed a clock—Hook hears him coming

🧠 My take: The ticking is such a genius kid-friendly horror gag. It’s funny and terrifying at the same time.

Tick-Tock is basically an underwater-style “predator” character even though he’s not ocean life. The clock gimmick is one of those classic animation ideas that never gets old.

Oscar (Shark Tale)

Oscar from Shark Tale, a famous cartoon sea creature character voiced by Will Smith in a DreamWorks ocean movie

🐟 Species: Fish (cleaner wrasse)

🎬 From: Shark Tale (2004)

💰 Vibe: loud dreams, bad decisions, big consequences

🧠 My take: Oscar is pure “talk your way out of it” energy—and I respect the commitment.

Oscar is the main protagonist of Shark Tale, and his whole personality is basically “I’m about to make a terrible choice, but I’m going to do it confidently.”

Mr. Krabs (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants, a famous cartoon sea animal character and the greedy crab owner of the Krusty Krab

🦀 Species: Crab

📺 From: SpongeBob SquarePants

💸 Vibe: capitalism, but make it cartoonish

🧠 My take: Mr. Krabs is hilarious because he’ll do anything for money… except raise Pearl without embarrassing her.

Mr. Krabs is the owner of the Krusty Krab, and he’s basically a walking joke about greed. If you’re building a bigger “best cartoon characters” list later, SpongeBob’s cast is a goldmine—same with my general watchlist hub: cartoons and anime to watch.

Pearl Krabs (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Pearl Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants, a cartoon whale character and Mr. Krabs teenage daughter

🐋 Species: Whale

📺 From: SpongeBob SquarePants

🎤 Vibe: dramatic teen + big emotions

🧠 My take: Pearl is the most accurate “teenager embarrassed by dad” character in the entire ocean.

Pearl is basically the emotional opposite of Mr. Krabs: she’s expressive, loud, and dramatic—while her dad is a penny-pinching gremlin.

Patrick Star (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants, a cute cartoon sea animal starfish character and SpongeBob’s best friend

⭐ Species: Starfish

📺 From: SpongeBob SquarePants

😂 Vibe: lovable idiot, legendary one-liners

🧠 My take: Patrick is “dumb cartoon character” excellence—he’s a walking punchline, but he’s weirdly wholesome.

Patrick is one of the most famous cartoon sea creatures ever because he’s simple, quotable, and somehow always involved in the dumbest possible plan. If you like this archetype, you’ll probably enjoy my deeper list of dumb cartoon characters.

My Picks: The Cutest Cartoon Sea Animals for Kids

  • Flounder — classic “cute cartoon sea animal” energy.
  • Dory — optimistic and funny, even when everything goes wrong.
  • Luca — sweet, modern, and perfect for younger kids.
  • Patrick — pure comedy for kids (and adults).

It is fascinating to see how these Cartoon Sea Animal Characters bridge the gap between fantasy and reality. It makes me wonder if the original animators were inspired by these underwater doppelgangers, or if it’s just a hilarious coincidence!
