Here is something I have come to believe about the best animation studios: the studio matters as much as the movie.
When I see the Pixar lamp hop across the screen, or Totoro pop up before a Ghibli film, I already know roughly what I am in for. A great studio has a fingerprint. It has a house style, a way of making you laugh or cry on cue. So instead of ranking films, I wanted to rank the places that make them.
These are the best animation studios in the world, in my opinion, the ones behind the movies and shows I grew up on and the ones I still rush to see. You will find the most popular and famous animation studios here, but also the indie hand-drawn gems, the stop-motion wizards, and the streaming newcomers. A few of them are sadly no longer with us, but they earned their spot.
One quick note before we dive in. This is a personal ranking of the top animation studios, not a box-office chart. And under each studio, I have listed what they are known for, so you can jump straight to your next watch.
The Best Animation Studios in the World
So here are the best animation studios I keep coming back to, ranked from my personal number one on down.
1Walt Disney Animation Studios
This is the one that started it all. Back in 1937, Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated feature anyone had ever made, and the entire industry grew out of that gamble. Decades later, Walt Disney Animation still tops almost every list of the best animation studios ever made.
The studio has now made more than 60 feature films. It gave us the Renaissance run of The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, then reinvented itself again with Frozen and Moana. In fact, no other studio comes close to that kind of multi-generational reach.
Known for:
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin and Mulan
- Frozen, Moana, Zootopia, and Encanto
2Pixar Animation Studios
If Disney built the house, Pixar rebuilt it from scratch in 1995. Toy Story did not just look new. It proved a computer-animated film could carry as much heart as anything drawn by hand, and Pixar has been wringing tears out of audiences ever since.
What I love about Pixar is the ambition. First, a movie about a trash-compacting robot. Then one set inside a kid’s emotions. Finally, a film about a rat who wants to cook. On paper these should not work, yet they keep landing.
Known for:
- The Toy Story films
- Finding Nemo and The Incredibles
- Up, WALL-E, and Ratatouille
- Inside Out and Coco
3Studio Ghibli
I will be upfront: Ghibli might be my favorite of all the best animation studios on this list. Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki, it has spent decades proving that hand-drawn animation can still outclass anything a render farm produces.
Ghibli films share a soul. They linger on quiet moments, they love nature, and they hand the lead to thoughtful, stubborn heroines. Indeed, few studios trust their audience the way this one does.
Known for:
- Spirited Away
- My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle
- The Boy and the Heron
4DreamWorks Animation
From day one, DreamWorks set itself up as the cheeky rival to Disney and Pixar. Early swings like Antz and The Prince of Egypt showed range, but it was Shrek that defined the brand: pop songs, sly jokes, and a refusal to play it safe.
Then How to Train Your Dragon arrived and reminded everyone the studio could do sincere and sweeping just as well as snarky. That balance is why DreamWorks keeps a permanent place among the best animation studios for me.
Known for:
- The Shrek franchise
- How to Train Your Dragon
- Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar
- The Prince of Egypt and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
5Sony Pictures Animation
For years, Sony’s animation arm was the scrappy underdog. It found early footing with crowd-pleasers like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Hotel Transylvania films. Fun, sure, but nothing that scared the giants.
Then came Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and everything changed. That film looked like nothing else in theaters, won the Oscar, and basically rewrote what mainstream CG animation was allowed to look like. Almost overnight, Sony went from underdog to one of the best animation studios working.
Known for:
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse
- The Hotel Transylvania films
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Open Season
6Aardman Animations
Aardman is the British studio that turned clay into comedy gold. Peter Lord and David Sproxton started it in 1972, and their fingerprints are quite literally all over the screen, since their characters are sculpted and posed by hand, frame by painstaking frame.
Wallace and Gromit are the crown jewels, an inventor and his far smarter dog. Still, there is a warmth and a very dry British humor to Aardman that no amount of CGI has ever managed to fake.
Known for:
- Wallace & Gromit and its short films
- Shaun the Sheep
- Chicken Run
- The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
7Laika Studios
If Aardman is the cozy side of stop-motion, Laika is the bold, slightly spooky one. Based in Oregon, it launched in 2009 with Coraline and immediately set a new bar for how strange and beautiful stop-motion could be.
Naturally, every Laika film is a technical marvel. The team blends old-school puppet work with cutting-edge 3D printing, and the results feel handmade and futuristic at the same time. I will watch anything they put out.
Known for:
- Coraline
- ParaNorman
- The Boxtrolls
- Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link
8Cartoon Saloon
Here is my pick for the best indie animation studio working today. Cartoon Saloon is a small Irish outfit in Kilkenny, founded in 1999, and it keeps quietly stealing Oscar nominations from studios a hundred times its size.
Its films draw on Irish folklore and look like illustrated storybooks come to life. If you have only watched big-studio CGI, watching Wolfwalkers feels like splashing cold water on your face. In the best way.
Known for:
- The Secret of Kells
- Song of the Sea
- The Breadwinner
- Wolfwalkers
9Warner Bros. Animation
Warner Bros. has been making cartoons since the 1930s, through more closures and revivals than I can count. Its movie record is patchy, though it gave us the underrated gem The Iron Giant. Instead, the small screen is where it truly rules.
This is the home of Looney Tunes, of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, and of Batman: The Animated Series, which a lot of people, me included, consider the best superhero cartoon ever made.
Known for:
- Looney Tunes
- Batman: The Animated Series
- Animaniacs
- The Iron Giant and Space Jam
10Nickelodeon Animation Studios
Founded in 1991, Nickelodeon Animation built itself into the king of kids’ television. If you grew up after the early 90s, a Nick show almost certainly shaped your sense of humor.
Then in 1999 it launched SpongeBob SquarePants, and the studio went from successful to unstoppable. SpongeBob became a genuine cultural phenomenon, and shows like Avatar proved Nick could do epic and emotional too.
Known for:
- SpongeBob SquarePants
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- Rugrats and Hey Arnold!
- The Fairly OddParents
11Illumination
Founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007, Illumination cracked a simple, ruthless formula: make bright, broad, family-friendly films on tight budgets, and watch them print money. Then the Minions took over the planet.
I will admit the studio is not chasing prestige. Rather, it is chasing fun and box office, and on those terms it wins constantly. The Super Mario Bros. Movie becoming one of the biggest animated films ever only proved the point.
Known for:
- Despicable Me and the Minions
- The Secret Life of Pets
- Sing and The Grinch
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie
12Netflix Animation
Netflix is the new kid, and it arrived swinging. Its 2019 feature Klaus was a hand-drawn Christmas film so gorgeous it announced the studio as a serious player overnight, and it has kept the quality up since.
The crown jewel so far is Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, a stop-motion stunner that won the Best Animated Feature Oscar. Either way, Netflix is funding bold animation that the old studios might not have touched, whatever you think of the streaming model.
Known for:
- Klaus
- Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
- The Sea Beast and Nimona
- Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, made with Aardman
13Paramount Animation
Paramount set up its own animation label in 2011, and it has been a streakier ride than the studios above. When it leans on a strong property, though, it delivers.
The studio adapted SpongeBob into two big-screen outings and handled Steven Spielberg’s motion-capture take on The Adventures of Tintin. The hits are not constant, but the ambition is there.
Known for:
- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
- The Adventures of Tintin
- Wonder Park
- Rumble and Sherlock Gnomes
14Blue Sky Studios
This one stings, because Blue Sky is no longer with us. Founded in 1987, it spent years on visual effects before Ice Age in 2002 turned it into a box-office machine with one panicked saber-toothed squirrel.
Across 13 features it built the Ice Age and Rio franchises and made a few truly lovely films like The Peanuts Movie. Ultimately, it deserved a better ending than it got.
Known for:
- The Ice Age franchise
- Rio
- Robots and Horton Hears a Who!
- The Peanuts Movie and Ferdinand
15Reel FX Animation Studios
Based in Dallas, Reel FX is the smaller name most casual fans have never heard of, yet it has one true knockout to its name. The Book of Life is a riot of color drawn from Mexican folklore, and it still looks gorgeous years later.
Beyond features, the studio does a lot of commercial and advertising work, which keeps the lights on between film projects. Even so, it is proof you do not need to be a household name to make something memorable.
Known for:
- The Book of Life
- Free Birds
- Rock Dog
- Wish Dragon and Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
16Disneytoon Studios
Last on my list is the studio behind a huge chunk of your childhood VHS shelf. Disneytoon was Disney’s sequel-and-spin-off division, and for years it churned out the follow-ups the main studio did not want to make.
That meant direct-to-video sequels to the classics, the long-running Tinker Bell films, and later the Planes franchise. The quality was hit or miss, but a lot of us watched these on repeat anyway. Disney closed it in 2018.
Known for:
- The Tinker Bell film series
- The Planes movies
- The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride
- Aladdin and the King of Thieves
Animation Studios by Type and Country
The best animation studios above are mostly the Western feature heavyweights. But the animation world is far bigger than that, so here is a quick map if you are hunting for something specific.
- Japanese and anime animation studios: Ghibli leads, but the anime world runs on giants like Toei Animation (Dragon Ball, One Piece, Sailor Moon), Sunrise (Gundam, Cowboy Bebop), MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Ufotable (Demon Slayer). There is a whole universe of Japanese animation studios worth its own list.
- Stop-motion specialists: Aardman and Laika are the two names to know, with Tim Burton’s projects and Netflix’s Pinocchio rounding out the field.
- Indie and hand-drawn: Cartoon Saloon flies the flag, alongside a growing crop of small studios making festival darlings outside the big-budget machine.
- TV-first studios: Nickelodeon, Warner Bros. Animation, and Cartoon Network Studios (Adventure Time, Steven Universe) own the small screen.
- Around the world: you will also find strong Korean animation studios such as Studio Mir, the team behind much of The Legend of Korra, a busy French animation scene built on arthouse features, and Canadian animation studios like Nelvana and Guru Studio, the home of PAW Patrol.
How Do Animation Studios Make Money?
This is one of the most common questions I get, so here is the short version. Even the best animation studios rarely live on ticket sales alone. The money usually comes from a mix of sources:
- Box office and streaming: theatrical runs plus licensing deals with services like Netflix and Disney+.
- Merchandise: toys, clothing, and games, which for a hit character can dwarf the film’s earnings.
- Theme parks and IP: this is where Disney makes its real fortune, turning characters into rides and resorts.
- Service work: smaller studios often animate scenes or whole shows for bigger ones, earning steady fees without owning the rights.
So when a studio nails a character, the film is often just the beginning of the payday.
So which of the best animation studios takes the crown? Ask ten fans and you will get ten answers. For me it comes down to Ghibli, Pixar, and Disney, and on most days Ghibli edges it. The fun of a list like this, though, is that there is no wrong pick.
Who is your favorite?
Did I rank yours too low, or leave one off completely?
Tell me in the comments, and I will keep the list growing.
