12 Must-Watch Anime Like High School DxD

Author: Kenny.b Updated: February 22, 2025

If you’re looking for anime like High School DxD, you’re usually chasing a very specific combo: supernatural action, a harem-ish romance setup, comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and unapologetic fanservice.

High School DxD started as a light novel by Ichiei Ishibumi (illustrated by Miyama-Zero) and follows Issei Hyoudou—killed on his first date, resurrected as a devil, and pulled into the Occult Research Club under Rias Gremory. It’s ridiculous, frequently over-the-top, and somehow still manages to be weirdly bingeable.

Quick note before we dive in: most of these picks are ecchi, meaning they lean into sexual comedy and fanservice. If you want the supernatural romance without that element, this list won’t be your best fit.

If you’re browsing by theme, these internal guides can help narrow your taste: anime genres, fan service anime series, anime about priests and demons, and isekai harem anime.

12 Must-Watch Anime Similar To High School DxD

I’m doing this as a countdown now: #12 starts here and #1 is at the bottom. The ranking is based on “DxD similarity” (tone + fanservice + supernatural/harem energy), not which series is objectively the greatest anime ever made.

Omamori Himari

Omamori Himari anime key visual, supernatural ecchi harem series with demon slayers and romantic comedy

✨ Vibe: Demon slayers + harem comedy

✅ Why it fits: High school lead + supernatural protector + fanservice

🧠 My Take: Not my strongest pick on the list, but it’s an easy watch if you want “classic ecchi supernatural” energy.

Omamori Himari follows Yuuto, who finds out he’s tied to a demon-slaying lineage, and Himari—the cat-spirit swordswoman assigned to protect him. The core appeal is the same DxD-style setup: a normal guy gets pulled into a supernatural world and ends up surrounded by powerful girls (and trouble).

Rosario + Vampire

Rosario + Vampire anime scene, ecchi harem comedy set at a monster school with vampires and supernatural romance

✨ Vibe: Monster school + supernatural harem

✅ Why it fits: Human boy surrounded by monsters, romance + fanservice

🧠 My Take: If you like DxD for the “supernatural school harem” vibe, this is an obvious detour.

Tsukune accidentally enrolls in a school for monsters… as the only human. With Moka (a vampire) and other supernatural girls around him, it leans heavily into comedy, romance chaos, and ecchi moments.

To Love-Ru

To Love-Ru anime key art, ecchi harem comedy with sci-fi romance and high school misunderstandings

✨ Vibe: Sci-fi harem + nonstop misunderstandings

✅ Why it fits: Ecchi comedy first, plot second (DxD fans usually get it)

🧠 My Take: If you want the “fanservice with a story wrapper” style, this scratches the itch.

To Love-Ru is basically harem chaos with alien royalty, accidental compromising situations, and comedic escalation as its main engine. If DxD is “demons + battle ecchi,” To Love-Ru is “romcom ecchi on maximum settings.”

If you want a softer version of this tone (less action, more comedy), you can also browse best romantic comedy anime or romcom anime shows.

Sekirei

Sekirei anime poster, supernatural battle harem with bonded partners and tournament-style fights

✨ Vibe: Battle harem with “bonded partners”

✅ Why it fits: Supernatural girls + chosen human + fights + fanservice

🧠 My Take: This is one of the closest “structural cousins” to DxD: the bond system basically fuels the entire setup.

Sekirei is built around supernatural beings who bond to a human (an “Ashikabi”) and then enter conflict with other pairs. If you like DxD’s “team of supernatural girls + one guy at the center” dynamic, Sekirei delivers that exact format.

Also, if you enjoy “supernatural abilities as spectacle,” you’ll probably like this too: anime characters with telekinetic powers.

Demon King Daimao

Demon King Daimao anime key visual, ecchi supernatural school series with demon king destiny and harem comedy

✨ Vibe: “Destined demon king” + school chaos

✅ Why it fits: Supernatural destiny + girls orbiting the protagonist + ecchi comedy

🧠 My Take: The premise is pure guilty-pleasure fuel, and that’s exactly why it works for DxD fans.

Akuto Sai gets labeled as the future Demon King and immediately becomes a magnet for fear, attention, and romantic chaos. It’s got that DxD-adjacent tone where the premise is dramatic but the execution keeps tipping into comedy and ecchi situations.

Is This a Zombie?

Is This a Zombie anime image, supernatural comedy with undead protagonist, magical girl powers, and harem chaos

✨ Vibe: Supernatural comedy that keeps getting weirder

✅ Why it fits: Undead lead + supernatural girls + ecchi-ish humor

🧠 My Take: The tone is more “chaotic comedy” than DxD, but if you like absurd supernatural setups, you’ll have fun.

Ayumu dies, gets resurrected as a zombie, and then his life becomes a supernatural traffic pileup involving a necromancer, a vampire ninja, and (yes) magical girl powers. If you like the “everything escalates” feeling of DxD, this is a strong match.

Related internal rabbit holes: anime with grim reapers and magical girl anime.

Haganai

Haganai anime poster, harem romcom about misfit students forming a club to make friends

✨ Vibe: Socially awkward romcom + harem tension

✅ Why it fits: Club setting + romantic chaos + comedic misunderstandings

🧠 My Take: Less supernatural than DxD, but if you watched DxD for the club dynamic and comedy, Haganai is a good pivot.

Haganai is essentially “misfits try to make friends,” except it evolves into romantic tension, comedy, and the awkward club-room vibe that DxD fans tend to enjoy.

Date A Live

✨ Vibe: Supernatural harem with an oddly wholesome “dating as conflict resolution” hook

✅ Why it fits: Powers + multiple love interests + comedy + action

🧠 My Take: Date A Live feels like DxD’s cousin that’s more “romance mission” than “battle club.”

Shido discovers he can seal the powers of “Spirits” (supernatural beings) through romance—yes, it’s as wild as it sounds. Like DxD, the series blends action and comedy with a rotating cast of powerful girls who each bring their own arc and personality.

4. So, I Can’t Play H!

So, I Can’t Play H! anime key art, ecchi supernatural comedy involving a grim reaper contract

✨ Vibe: Ecchi supernatural contract + shinigami angle

✅ Why it fits: Horny protagonist + supernatural girl + “power system” tied to comedy

🧠 My Take: If you like DxD’s “power-up meets fanservice” formula, this one is very direct about it.

Ryosuke ends up helping Lisara Restall—an elite Grim Reaper—after they form a contract. The hook is intentionally shameless and built for ecchi comedy, but it also has a surprisingly clear supernatural premise.

If you want more reaper-themed anime after this: anime with grim reapers.

Highschool of the Dead

Highschool of the Dead anime image, zombie apocalypse action with heavy fanservice and survival tension

✨ Vibe: Zombie survival + action + fanservice

✅ Why it fits: “Serious danger” story beats mixed with heavy ecchi moments

🧠 My Take: This one is more intense than DxD, but it’s a classic for fans who like action + shameless fanservice in a crisis setting.

Highschool of the Dead swaps demons for zombies, but keeps the “high-energy action + fanservice” blend. If you enjoy “end of the world” stories, here’s a related internal guide: zombie anime.

Trinity Seven

Trinity Seven anime key visual, magic academy harem series with powerful mage girls and supernatural comedy

✨ Vibe: Magic academy + harem + confident protagonist

✅ Why it fits: Supernatural school setting, comedy, fanservice, and a cast built around distinct “types”

🧠 My Take: Trinity Seven is one of the closest matches to DxD’s “club/cast chemistry” style, just with mages instead of devils.

Arata enrolls in a magic academy and ends up surrounded by seven elite mages. If you like DxD for the “team of powerful girls + one guy learning the rules” structure, Trinity Seven is a very safe recommendation.

The Testament of Sister New Devil

The Testament of Sister New Devil anime poster, demon step-sisters supernatural harem action and ecchi fanservice

✨ Vibe: DxD’s closest “parallel series”

✅ Why it fits: Demons + harem setup + action + extremely direct fanservice

🧠 My Take: If your goal is “give me something as close to DxD as possible,” this is usually the first answer.

Basara suddenly gets two demon step-sisters, Mio and Maria, and is forced into a protector role that quickly turns into supernatural conflict… and lots of ecchi tension. It’s one of the most common recommendations for people who specifically want the DxD flavor (not just “ecchi,” but “supernatural ecchi with battles”).

And if you want more lists built around a specific vibe, you can bookmark: anime like High School DxD.

My Picks (If You Only Watch Three)

  • The Testament of Sister New Devil – the closest “same recipe” match.
  • Trinity Seven – magic academy + strong cast chemistry.
  • Date A Live – supernatural action + romance missions + addictive pacing.

This is the list I have been looking for! It is honestly a struggle to find anime that fill the void left by High School DxD. I feel like DxD caught lightning in a bottle—it managed to balance extreme ecchi fan service with a genuinely engaging shonen battle plot, deep lore based on mythology, and character development that actually goes somewhere.

Most people dismiss the harem genre as just “trashy fun,” but DxD proved that you can have high stakes, political intrigue (the whole Devils vs. Angels vs. Fallen Angels war), and emotional beats alongside the “plot,” if you know what I mean.

I completely agree with your recommendation of The Testament of Sister New Devil (Shinmai Maou no Testament). In my experience, this is the closest thing to a “spiritual successor” to Issei’s adventures. It has almost the exact same setup: a supernatural contract, a red-headed princess figure (Mio vs. Rias), and a power system that scales up as the protagonist protects his girls. However, I’d argue Testament leans a bit more into the serious/action side and pushes the boundaries of censorship even further than DxD in the later seasons. It’s definitely a “must-watch” for DxD fans, but maybe make sure you are watching with headphones on!
