Friendliest Characters in Anime

Author: Kenny.b Updated: August 22, 2025

The kindness of anime characters like Megumi Tadokoro, Tanjiro Kamado, and Naruto proves something I genuinely believe: in anime, kind people can be the strongest.

When we talk about anime icons, the conversation usually goes straight to power, battle feats, and “who wins.” But some of the most memorable characters aren’t the ones with the flashiest attacks—they’re the ones who make everyone around them better. The friendliest characters in anime are basically comfort characters: they bring warmth, empathy, and calm even when the story is chaos.

This list is for anyone searching for wholesome anime characters, nicest anime protagonists, or just a roster of friendly anime heroes who feel like a reset button for your mood.

If you like posts that focus on “vibe” more than power scaling, you might also enjoy: anime where the main character is basically the villain (the total opposite energy), anime characters with telekinetic powers, and my darker contrast picks like anime characters with scary smiles and scariest anime laughs.

Friendliest Characters in Anime That Will Warm Your Heart

These characters aren’t “friendly” because they’re pushovers. They’re friendly because they choose empathy, patience, and loyalty even when it would be easier to be cold.

14
Sakuta Azusagawa – Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

Sakuta Azusagawa

✨ Friendly trait: Helps people even when it costs him socially

💬 What stands out: Calm, honest, and quietly protective

🧠 My Take: Sakuta feels like the kind of friend who shows up without making you beg for help.

Sakuta’s kindness drives the story because he chooses to step in when others would look away. He’s not “sweet” in a loud, bubbly way—he’s kind in the most practical way: he listens, he stays present, and he doesn’t abandon people when things get complicated.

13
Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama – Mob Psycho 100

Mob – Mob Psycho 100

✨ Friendly trait: Uses overwhelming power responsibly

💬 What stands out: Gentle, humble, and emotionally sincere

🧠 My Take: Mob is proof that “good-hearted” doesn’t mean “weak.”

Mob has enough psychic power to bulldoze most problems, but his defining trait is restraint. He tries hard not to hurt people, even when he’s scared, provoked, or underestimated. If you like psychic anime, this is also a great companion post: telekinetic characters in anime.

12
Megumi Tadokoro – Food Wars

Megumi Tadokoro – Food Wars

✨ Friendly trait: Supportive, polite, and dependable under pressure

💬 What stands out: Kindness + personal growth

🧠 My Take: Megumi is a comfort-character archetype: anxious, but always trying.

Megumi starts out insecure, but she keeps showing up for people anyway. She’s one of those most caring anime characters who becomes stronger without losing her softness, and that’s exactly why fans root for her.

11
Tanjiro Kamado – Demon Slayer

Tanjiro Kamado - Demon Slayer

✨ Friendly trait: Compassion without naivety

💬 What stands out: Empathy—even toward enemies

🧠 My Take: Tanjiro’s kindness feels active. He doesn’t just “care”—he acts on it.

Tanjiro is one of the best examples of a wholesome shonen protagonist. He’s gentle, but he’s not passive. He protects people, supports Nezuko, and still manages to empathize with the tragedy behind many demons. That mix of strength and mercy is exactly what makes him so beloved.

10
Takemichi Hanagaki – Tokyo Revengers

Hanagaki Takemichi

✨ Friendly trait: Loyal to the point of self-sacrifice

💬 What stands out: Courage built from care, not ego

🧠 My Take: He’s friendly in the “I won’t abandon you” sense—even when he’s terrified.

Takemichi starts as someone people underestimate, but his kindness turns into determination. He keeps trying because he genuinely cares about saving people—not because he wants to look strong. (External reference: Tokyo Revengers on MyAnimeList.)

9
Banagher Links – Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn

Banagher Links - Gundam

✨ Friendly trait: Compassion that extends even to enemies

💬 What stands out: Idealism that doesn’t feel fake

🧠 My Take: Banagher is one of those rare protagonists whose kindness feels like a philosophy, not a gimmick.

Banagher’s warmth shows up in how he treats other people’s pain as real—even when politics and war try to turn everyone into a symbol. It’s a very “big heart in a harsh world” kind of kindness.

8
Emma – The Promised Neverland

Emma - The Promised Neverland

✨ Friendly trait: Protects others as her default setting

💬 What stands out: Hope under pressure

🧠 My Take: Emma’s kindness isn’t naïve—it’s stubborn. And I respect that.

Emma is one of the strongest examples of “kindness as leadership.” Her friendliness isn’t limited to small gestures—she makes choices that prioritize people, even when the situation punishes that instinct.

7
Gon Freecss – Hunter x Hunter

Gon - Hunter x Hunter

✨ Friendly trait: Open-hearted and quick to trust

💬 What stands out: Makes friends easily, fights fiercely for them

🧠 My Take: Gon’s friendliness is real, but it’s also intense—he cares hard.

Gon is one of those friendly anime heroes who makes allies everywhere he goes. And while he’s generally warm and optimistic, the part that sticks with me is how loyal he becomes once someone is “his person.”

6
Tohru Honda – Fruits Basket

Tohru Honda - Fruits Basket

✨ Friendly trait: Softness that heals people

💬 What stands out: Compassion even when she’s struggling

🧠 My Take: Tohru is the definition of a comfort character—she makes the room feel safer.

Tohru’s kindness is consistent, almost like a guiding principle. She’s the kind of character who changes a family dynamic just by being present and refusing to treat people like they’re beyond help.

5
Naruto Uzumaki – Naruto

Naruto - Naruto

✨ Friendly trait: Optimism that turns enemies into allies

💬 What stands out: Empathy, forgiveness, motivation

🧠 My Take: Naruto’s kindness is loud, messy, and persistent—which is why it works.

Naruto is one of the most famous examples of a protagonist who wins people over with heart, not polish. He’s friendly, impulsive, and genuinely cares about protecting others. If you’re also following Naruto news, here’s a related post: is Naruto getting a remake?

4
Puck – Berserk

Puck - Berserk

✨ Friendly trait: Light in a brutal world

💬 What stands out: Humor, loyalty, emotional grounding

🧠 My Take: Puck is a reminder that friendliness can be survival—especially in the darkest stories.

Berserk is famously heavy, which is exactly why Puck matters. He’s friendly in the “keeps someone human” way—bringing warmth and humor to a world that wants to crush both.

3
Monkey D. Luffy – One Piece

Luffy – One Piece

✨ Friendly trait: Loyal, welcoming, instantly bonds with people

💬 What stands out: Kindness that’s direct and action-based

🧠 My Take: Luffy is friendly in the simplest way: if you’re his friend, you’re family—end of discussion.

Luffy’s friendliness is contagious. He’s not trying to be “good” for reputation points—he just hates bullies and loves freedom. If you’re on a One Piece run, you might like smart characters in One Piece too.

2
Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist

✨ Friendly trait: Protective, loyal, and deeply principled

💬 What stands out: “Tough exterior, big heart” done right

🧠 My Take: Ed acts like a grump, but he’s the kind of person who will risk everything to save someone.

Edward isn’t “friendly” in a bubbly way—he’s friendly in the sense that he shows up and does the right thing, even when it hurts. He’s a strong example of an anime hero whose kindness is rooted in ethics and responsibility.

1
Goku – Dragon Ball

Goku - Dragon Ball

✨ Friendly trait: Cheerful, welcoming, and weirdly wholesome for how strong he is

💬 What stands out: Sees potential in people (even rivals)

🧠 My Take: Goku’s friendliness can be reckless, but it’s also what makes him iconic.

Goku is friendly in the purest “let’s be friends and fight later” way. He’s optimistic, curious, and quick to respect others. Sometimes he’s too trusting, but that’s part of why he feels so classic.

My Picks (If You Only Want the Warmest Hearts)

  • Tanjiro: kindness with backbone—compassion that doesn’t compromise resolve.
  • Mob: the nicest “overpowered” character because he tries not to hurt anyone.
  • Tohru: the definition of an anime comfort character—she heals people emotionally.
  • Naruto: stubborn empathy that changes the world around him.
  • Luffy: pure friendliness + loyalty, without calculation or image management.

I absolutely love that you are shining a spotlight on the friendliest characters in anime. In a medium that is often dominated by edgy anti-heroes, brooding avengers, and “cool” loners, I think we often undervalue the characters whose primary strength is their heart.

There is a misconception in shonen anime specifically that being “nice” or “friendly” makes a character weak or naive. But if you look at the heavy hitters you likely have on this list—characters like Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer or Izuku Midoriya (Deku) from My Hero Academia—their empathy is actually their greatest weapon.

Take Tanjiro, for example. He is arguably the friendliest protagonist in modern anime history. He treats everyone with respect, from the Hashira to the villagers. But what makes him unique is that he extends that kindness even to the demons he has to kill. He doesn’t kill out of hate; he kills out of necessity, and he often prays for their souls afterward. That level of emotional intelligence and compassion takes way more strength than just being angry. It allows him to make allies where others would make enemies.

This brings up the concept of the “sunshine character”—the one who pulls everyone into their orbit just by being a good person. Monkey D. Luffy is another great example. Sure, he is a pirate, but his “power” isn’t just stretching; it is his ability to turn anyone into a friend. Dracule Mihawk even calls it “the most dangerous ability in the sea” during the Marineford arc. When a character is genuinely friendly and open, people want to fight for them. That is a tactical advantage that the “edgy loner” archetype just doesn’t have.
