Anime does swords better than just about any other medium. A great blade is never only a weapon here. It is a character in its own right, with a name, a backstory, and usually a serious body count.
This is my rundown of the coolest swords in anime, a mix of legendary named blades and the sword-fighting series that show them off. Some are real show-stoppers, some are pure spectacle, and a few are deeply silly. Let’s draw steel.
The Coolest Anime Swords
No strict ranking here, just the blades and sword anime I keep coming back to.
17Brave 10
Brave 10 is a fast, pulpy samurai-era action show built around the Sanada Ten Braves, a band of warriors from Japanese legend. If you want clashing blades and ninja duels without a heavy time commitment, it delivers.
- A 2012 anime set in Japan’s warring Sengoku period
- Follows the ninja Saizo and the Sanada Ten Braves
- Heavy on fast sword-and-ninja action
- A good, breezy pick for swordplay fans
16Sengoku Basara
Sengoku Basara started as a Capcom hack-and-slash game and became an over-the-top anime about warring samurai lords. It is gloriously ridiculous, and the swordplay is the whole point.
- Based on Capcom’s Sengoku-era action games
- Real warlords reimagined as flashy action heroes
- Wall-to-wall battlefield sword combat
- Style cranked far past historical accuracy
15Yoru (One Piece)
Yoru is the giant black sword carried by Dracule Mihawk, the strongest swordsman in One Piece. It is shaped like a cross and looks like it weighs more than its owner.
- The personal blade of “Hawk-Eyes” Mihawk
- A massive crucifix-shaped greatsword
- Cuts through warships and ice with a casual swing
- The benchmark every other swordsman is measured against
14The Heroic Legend of Arslan
The Heroic Legend of Arslan is a sweeping war epic about a gentle young prince of a Persia-inspired kingdom. When his father’s empire falls, Arslan has to grow into a leader, and there are huge cavalry-and-sword battles along the way.
- Based on Yoshiki Tanaka’s long-running novels
- Set in the fictional kingdom of Pars
- Follows the kindhearted prince Arslan into war
- Big, sweeping medieval battle scenes
13Basilisk
Basilisk is a darker, bloodier entry: two rival ninja clans, the Iga and the Kouga, are sent to war against each other, with a doomed romance caught in the middle. It is essentially Romeo and Juliet with ninjutsu and swords.
- A 2005 anime based on a classic Japanese novel
- Two ninja clans forced into a brutal war
- A tragic love story at its center
- Plenty of blade and ninjutsu duels
12Elucidator and Dark Repulser (Sword Art Online)
The Elucidator and Dark Repulser are Kirito’s twin swords in Sword Art Online, and the dual-wielding scenes made them instantly iconic. Cosplayers have been carrying these two around at conventions for years.
- Kirito’s signature pair of blades in Aincrad
- The black Elucidator and the teal Dark Repulser
- Wielded together in his dual-wield style
- Two of the most recognizable swords in modern anime
11Future Trunks’ Sword (Dragon Ball)
In a series where everyone throws energy blasts, Future Trunks stands out by showing up with a sword. He uses it the moment he arrives, and it is one of Dragon Ball’s best entrances.
- Carried by Trunks from a dark alternate future
- A plain, no-frills broadsword
- Used alongside his Saiyan strength and ki
- A rare melee weapon in a world of energy attacks
10Juni Taisen: Zodiac War
Juni Taisen is a brutal battle royale where twelve warriors named after the Chinese zodiac fight to the death. Do not get too attached to anyone. The action, including the sword work, looks fantastic even when the plot does not quite land.
- A twelve-fighter death game, one per zodiac animal
- Slick, high-budget animation and combat
- From NisiOisiN, the writer behind the Monogatari series
- Style over substance, but the style is great
9Rurouni Kenshin
Rurouni Kenshin follows Himura Kenshin, a former assassin in Meiji-era Japan who has sworn off killing. His sword is the heart of the whole story, and it is a clever idea.
- A wandering swordsman trying to atone for his past
- Once the feared assassin Hitokiri Battosai
- Now vows never to take a life again
- Some of the best sword duels in anime
8Blade of the Immortal
Blade of the Immortal is a grim, gory samurai story about Manji, a swordsman who literally cannot die. He teams up with a girl named Rin who is hunting the men who murdered her family.
- Based on Hiroaki Samura’s acclaimed manga
- Manji is cursed with immortality by sacred bloodworms
- He must slay 1,000 evil men to finally die
- He fights with a small armory of hidden blades
7Excalibur (Soul Eater)
Soul Eater takes the most famous sword in Western legend and turns it into a joke, and somehow it works. In this world, weapons have personalities, and Excalibur’s is unbearable.
- The legendary Excalibur reimagined in Soul Eater
- Supposedly the most powerful weapon around
- In its non-sword form, a babbling white creature
- Almost nobody can stand to wield it
6The Twelve Kingdoms
The Twelve Kingdoms drops an ordinary high schooler, Yoko, into a sprawling fantasy world of warring kingdoms. It is a slower, richer fantasy than most on this list, but the sword matters from the start.
- A teenage girl pulled into a vast fantasy realm
- Built on detailed, almost mythic world-building
- Yoko is handed a sacred sword and a guardian early on
- A more thoughtful, political kind of sword fantasy
5Rengoku’s Nichirin Blade (Demon Slayer)
Demon Slayer is full of great swords, but Rengoku’s is the one that sticks with me. The Flame Hashira carries a blade that looks like it is on fire even when it is still.
- Wielded by Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira
- A red Nichirin blade with a flame-shaped guard
- Matches his explosive Flame Breathing style
- One of the most memorable looks in the show
4Anti-Titan Blades (Attack on Titan)
Attack on Titan’s soldiers do not get magic swords or named blades. They get standard-issue steel, and watching them take on giants with it is part of what makes the show so tense.
- The standard blades of the anti-titan military
- Carried by nearly every major character
- Used with the swooping omni-directional mobility gear
- The whole fight against the Titans rests on them
3Scissor Blade (Kill la Kill)
The Scissor Blade is the signature weapon of Kill la Kill, and it is exactly what it sounds like: one half of a giant pair of scissors. In a show this wild, it fits right in.
- Ryuko Matoi’s red half of a giant scissor blade
- Forged by her father before his murder
- Designed to cut the show’s special Life Fibers
- Can shrink down or grow larger than a building
2Dragon Slayer (Berserk)
The Dragon Slayer is the enormous slab of a sword carried by Guts in Berserk, and it set the standard for every oversized anime sword that followed. It is less a blade than a wall of iron.
- Guts’ signature weapon in the dark fantasy Berserk
- So massive that only he can swing it
- Pure crushing weight over any finesse
- The template for giant swords like Cloud’s Buster Sword
1Giyu Tomioka’s Sword (Demon Slayer)
I will end with one more Demon Slayer blade, because Giyu Tomioka earns it. The Water Hashira is calm, serious, and absurdly skilled, and his sword reflects all of that.
- Carried by Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira
- A blue Nichirin blade tuned to Water Breathing
- Flowing, precise, water-like sword techniques
- The first Hashira we really see fight in the series
A Few Anime Sword Facts I Like
A handful of extras for the sword nerds:
- Guts’ Dragon Slayer started life as a simple gimmick: creator Kentaro Miura wanted a sword big enough to grab readers’ attention, then built Guts’ huge frame around it.
- Date Masamune and Roronoa Zoro, two of anime’s most famous multi-sword fighters, share the same Japanese voice actor, Kazuya Nakai.
- Kirito’s dual-wield combo in Sword Art Online moves so fast that the show gives it a sound like a jet engine.
That is my tour through the coolest swords in anime, from a reverse-edged katana to a slab of iron the size of a door. Which anime blade is your favorite? Drop it in the comments.
