Who Is Mooncake?
Mooncake is one of the two lead characters of Final Space, the space-opera comedy-drama from creator Olan Rogers. He teams up with Gary Goodspeed, a lonely convict, and the two set off to save the universe.
He cannot talk. He only chirps. Yet somehow he ends up the most important character on the show. Every villain in the galaxy wants his power.

He cannot say a word, but his bond with Gary carries the whole emotional weight of the show. When Mooncake is happy, you are happy. When he is scared or sad, it hits hard. That is a lot to ask of a green ball that only says “chookity,” and yet it works every time.
Mooncake’s Origin and Background
Mooncake was not born so much as detonated into existence. Years before the show starts, Gary’s father, John Goodspeed, set off an anti-matter bomb to seal a breach into Final Space. The leftover energy from that blast created Mooncake.

Did you know? Gary does not pick the name Mooncake at random. He names the alien after a pet caterpillar his father gave him as a kid. John handed it over right before the mission that killed him. Bullies later killed the real caterpillar, so the name carries a lot of quiet grief.
Mooncake’s Personality
Mooncake is sweet, trusting, and quick to love almost anyone he meets. Gary sits at the top of that list.
Underneath the cheer, though, he carries real guilt. He knows he is a planet destroyer, and he hates it. A future version of Quinn even warns him that death follows him wherever he goes. One day, she says, it will reach Gary too. That lands hard on a character this gentle.
His love for Gary is also his biggest danger. If Gary is ever badly hurt or killed, Mooncake’s grief overloads his powers and turns him into an unstoppable weapon.
He is more than a cute mascot, too. In season two he sits down and plays a chess-style game with Clarence.

The Gary and Mooncake friendship is the reason the show works. Gary chooses to see the good in Mooncake and ignore the weapon inside him. In return, Mooncake throws himself into danger to keep Gary safe again and again.
It is not all smooth, though. In “The Notorious Mrs. Goodspeed,” Mooncake gets jealous when Gary reconnects with his estranged mother, Sheryl.

- Super inhalation: In “Descent Into Darkness,” he creates a vacuum to suck in objects, which he uses to rescue KVN.
- Rubber body: His squishy form lets him bounce off surfaces without a scratch.
His powers are not bottomless. In “The Toro Regatta,” the Lord Commander hooks him to a machine called the dimension splitter that drains him completely.
He stays powerless for a while. He gets it all back in “Arachnitects,” saving Gary and sealing the breach to keep the monstrous Invictus locked away.
Who Voices Mooncake?
Here is a fact that surprises a lot of people: Mooncake is voiced by Olan Rogers, the man who created Final Space. Rogers also voices Gary, which means he is basically holding both ends of the show’s central friendship.
Mooncake never speaks real words. His whole vocabulary is a set of chirps and coos, with “chookity” and “chookity pok” as his go-to lines. Rogers gives each little sound a different feel, so you always know whether Mooncake is happy, scared, or about to cry. The Real Story Behind Mooncake
Mooncake existed long before Final Space hit TV. Rogers first built the world as a scrappy YouTube project called Gary Space back around 2010. He later reworked it and posted a Final Space pilot in 2016.
- Comedian Conan O’Brien spotted that pilot, flew Rogers out to pitch it, and came on board as an executive producer.
- The ship that first finds Mooncake, the Scarlet Lance, is named after an old Star Wars fan film Rogers once made.
- Final Space ran three seasons before Warner Bros. cancelled it during the big Discovery merger.
