Sylvia is the muscle, the voice of reason, and the beating heart of Wander Over Yonder. She is a big blue alien called a Zbornak. She spends the whole show carrying an unstoppable optimist across the galaxy on her back.

If Wander is the dreamer, Sylvia is the one who makes sure the dreaming does not get them both killed.

Here is the full breakdown on the toughest, most loyal sidekick in the show.

Who Is Sylvia?

Sylvia is the deuteragonist of Wander Over Yonder. The show comes from Craig McCracken, the same mind behind The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. She is a Zbornak, which is basically a cross between a horse, a dinosaur, and an ostrich.

She and Wander travel the universe together, helping strangers and dodging the villain Lord Hater. Sylvia is the steed, but she is nobody’s servant. She is the fighter, the planner, and the friend who keeps Wander grounded.

Here is a detail I love: Sylvia is the reason Wander is even called Wander. His original name was Tumbleweed, and he only became “Wander” after Sylvia called him a “wandering weirdo.” She named the hero of the show without even trying.

Mighty Brawn and a Golden Heart

Sylvia from Wander Over Yonder, the blue Zbornak

You cannot talk about Sylvia without talking about her strength. As a Zbornak, she is built like a tank, and she loves a good fight.

What makes her great is what she does with all that power. She uses it to protect people, not to bully them. She even has a berserk rage mode fans call her “Time Bomb” state. In it, she turns bright red and loses control. It is a rare thing on a kids’ show: a strong character who has to actively choose to fight with her heart instead of just her fists.

Sylvia’s Personality

Sylvia showing her tough personality in Wander Over Yonder

Sylvia is tough, competitive, and quick to throw a punch. She hides a soft heart under all that swagger, and her temper gets the better of her more than once.

Her protective streak is her defining trait:

  • She reads danger fast, especially when Wander is too trusting to see it.
  • In “The Stray,” she instantly distrusts the adorable Little Bits. When Little Bits turns out to be a bounty hunter, she decks Wander to save him.
  • Cuteness does not work on her, which the show plays for great laughs.

When she thinks Wander is truly in danger, the jokes stop and you see how much she loves him.

Sylvia’s Background

Sylvia the bounty hunter in her Wander Over Yonder backstory

The episode “The Waste of Time” fills in Sylvia’s past, and it is not a gentle one. She used to be a bounty hunter. She first met Wander while trying to collect the reward on his head.

Wander being Wander, he simply wore her down with kindness until she gave up the hunter life to travel with him instead.

  • Before Wander, she ran with a reckless partner named Ryder, and the two were a great team in a fight.
  • She eventually walked away from him, because she realized being around Ryder made her a worse person.
  • She also has a family back home: her mom Dorothy, three brothers named Bill, Gil, and Phil, and a grandmother.

Wander and Sylvia

Wander and Sylvia are total opposites, and that is the whole point. He is pure sunshine. She is practical and a little cynical. Together they balance out perfectly.

Wander gives Sylvia warmth and support, even when his goofy schemes drive her nuts. In return, she gives him muscle and a reality check. She admires how his kindness always seems to win, even when she is sure it will not. She also lets him sleep on her and keeps a spot in her saddle just for him. That says everything about how much she cares.

Sylvia and Lord Hater

Sylvia facing off against Lord Hater

Sylvia has zero patience for Lord Hater, the skeleton warlord who wants to rule the galaxy. Where Wander tries to befriend Hater, Sylvia sees the danger for what it is.

She knows he outguns her in a straight fight, so she picks her battles carefully. Hater is mostly obsessed with Wander. Still, Sylvia lands at number two on his most-wanted list, and she wears it like a badge of honor.

Sylvia’s Other Relationships

Sylvia with the other Wander Over Yonder characters

Sylvia bounces off a whole cast of oddballs across the galaxy:

  • Commander Peepers: Hater’s tiny, eyeball-headed second-in-command, and the brains of the empire. Sylvia spends most of her time wrecking his careful plans.
  • Ryder: Her old bounty-hunting partner, and a reminder of the person she used to be.
  • The Watchdogs: Hater’s eyeball minions. One-on-one, they are no match for her.
  • Captain Tim: A vicious pet spider she and Wander accidentally handed to Lord Hater.
  • Emperor Awesome: A shark-headed party villain who, weirdly, has a crush on her.

Who Voices Sylvia?

Sylvia is voiced by April Winchell, and this is my favorite piece of trivia in the whole cluster. Winchell is the daughter of Paul Winchell, the ventriloquist and voice actor. He was the original voice of Tigger in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. So Sylvia is, in a roundabout way, voiced by Tigger’s daughter.

  • Winchell is a Disney veteran, currently the voice of Clarabelle Cow.
  • She also voiced Peg Pete in Goof Troop and Ms. Finster in Recess.
  • By her own account, Sylvia is her favorite role ever.

Her warm, gravelly delivery is a huge part of why Sylvia feels so real. You can find her full list of credits on her IMDb page.

Did you know? Wander Over Yonder came from a stacked creative team. Craig McCracken created it. His wife Lauren Faust (of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) co-produced season one, and Noelle Stevenson (She-Ra, Nimona) wrote for season two.

Tyler’s take: Sylvia is the reason this show has a soul. Wander gets the big lovable moments, but Sylvia is the one who has to do the worrying, the fighting, and the protecting. She is the best kind of sidekick, the one who is secretly the real hero.

She has a best friend she would cross the galaxy to protect. She carries Wander everywhere, and she carries the whole show right along with him.
