Frida The Best Friend of Hilda

Frida from Hilda is one of my favorite characters in the whole Hilda series, and she is the kind of friend a lot of us wish we had in school. She is the organized one, the planner, the girl with a notebook for everything and a real fear of getting anything less than perfect.

But there is so much more to her than the straight-A overachiever she looks like at first glance.

Who Is Frida from Hilda?

Frida is one of Hilda’s two best friends, alongside David, and one of the three kids at the heart of the show.

She is a dedicated member of the Sparrow Scouts, a top student, and by far the most responsible of the trio. If Hilda charges headfirst into an adventure, Frida is the one already drawing up a plan and a backup plan.

She starts the series as an 11-year-old, and by the time Season 3 rolls around she is 13 and noticeably taller. She is an only child who lives with her mom and dad, and she first shows up in the animated series in Chapter 2, “The Midnight Giant.”

Here is the thing I love about her: for all her polish, she is deeply anxious under the surface, and watching her learn to loosen her grip on perfection is one of the most quietly moving arcs in the show.

Frida and Hilda’s Friendship

The friendship between Frida and Hilda is the engine of her whole character, and it is a great example of opposites clicking.

Hilda is fearless, spontaneous, and a little reckless. Frida is careful, methodical, and cautious. Put them together and they solve problems neither could crack alone, which is the whole point.

Their bond deepens in a lovely way once Frida starts studying witchcraft, because Hilda becomes her familiar, the magical companion to a witch in training.

As Frida herself puts it, “It’s never a good idea to throw away your real friends,” and the show keeps proving her right.

A quick note, since people search for this a lot: are Hilda and Frida a couple? No. The show frames them as close best friends, and while a section of the fandom likes to ship them, it is not canon in the series. David rounds out the trio as the nervous, good-hearted third friend, and Frida is usually the one keeping him out of trouble.

Frida’s Struggle with Perfectionism

The most relatable thing about Frida is her perfectionism, and the show is honest about where it comes from. Her parents love her, but they push her hard, and she is terrified of letting them down. In Chapter 5, “The Troll Rock,” they literally ask her teacher to pile on extra math homework to bump her grade from 99 all the way up to 100. Imagine that kind of pressure at 11.

The big turning point is Chapter 9, “The Ghost.” Here is the twist most people forget: Frida’s bedroom was always spotless because a ghost had secretly been tidying it every night.

When that ghost leaves, her room descends into chaos, and her whole image of herself as effortlessly perfect falls apart with it.

She spirals, drops out of the class president race, and briefly ditches Hilda and David before finding her way back. It is a surprisingly deep lesson for a kids’ show: perfection is a mask, and dropping it is how you really grow.

Frida the Witch

This is the part of Frida’s story I think gets overlooked, and it is my favorite addition the animated series makes. Starting in Season 2, Frida becomes a witch in training.

It kicks off in Chapter 3, “The Witch,” when she and Hilda discover the hidden Witches Tower and learn the town librarian, Kaisa, is secretly a witch.

Frida solves a maze full of magical puzzles so cleverly that the witch Matilda Pilqvist offers to take her on as a student.

• She casts spells using a wand that Hilda salvages for her from a sunken ship.
• Her magic is powerful but unpredictable, and she once turns a grown man into a bug by accident.
• Her signature trick is a spell that lets her mentally connect with other creatures, which she uses to reason with a Kraken and, later, with the trolls.

It fits her perfectly. Of course the studious kid who loves puzzles and books would take to witchcraft like a natural. It gives her a real role in the group’s adventures beyond just being the sensible one.

What Frida Looks Like

Frida has a brown complexion, black hair with a light brown highlight tied back, and black eyes. Her everyday outfit is usually a teal hoodie with an orange stripe, black pants, and white shoes, though early art and merchandise sometimes show her in a lilac hoodie instead.

When she is on Sparrow Scout duty, she wears the classic dark yellow scout jacket with a red scarf, a matching skirt, and black pants.

By Season 3 she gets a full redesign to match her older age: a gray sweater over a white shirt, a purple headband, and her hair tied into two ponytails with purple bands.

Small detail, but I love that the show physically grows her up instead of freezing her in time.

Graphic Novels vs the Animated Show

If you have only seen the Netflix show, the Frida from the original graphic novels might surprise you.

In Luke Pearson’s books she is a minor character who only crosses paths with Hilda or David a handful of times, and the two of them appear together just once, in Hilda and the Stone Forest.

The books reveal almost nothing about her home life or her family.

The animated series is where Frida gets promoted to a full lead and finally gets a real inner world. The show invents her perfectionist parents, her fear of failure, and her entire witch storyline, none of which exist in the comics.

It is one of the best examples I can think of where an adaptation takes a background character and turns her into someone you truly care about.

Who Voices Frida in Hilda?

Frida is voiced by Ameerah Falzon-Ojo, and she does a wonderful job with the role. The character asks a lot of a young actor, since Frida swings from bossy and confident to fragile and self-doubting, sometimes in the same scene, and Ameerah lands every note of it.

It is a performance that makes Frida feel like a real kid rather than a cartoon overachiever, and it is a big reason the character resonates with viewers who see their own anxieties reflected in her.
